“It may be true, as I believe it is, that the natural form of a tree is the most beautiful possible for that tree, but it may happen that we do not want the most beautiful form, but one of our own designing, and expressive of our ingenuity" — Shirley Hibberd, The Amateurs Flower Garden 1884
Topiaries represent man’s intervention in nature, as without man’s hand such shapes could not exist. My ceramic topiaries and their placement in the desert symbolize the human drive to influence nature in what are sometimes inhospitable environments.
The sculptures are composed of stacked ceramic rings to the height of 7’. The rings will be formed from an architectural clay, glazed and fired for strength and durablility in an outdoor setting. The rings are attached to an internal aluminum column with the base bolted to the concrete pad. |
