"Snake in the Grass" - Grace Park
PreviousEastern Nebraska Veteran’s Home "Snake Wall" - Grace Park Next

My proposal for Grace Park will honor Grace Olive Wiley who lived in the neighborhood and was a nationally known Herpetologist with a profound interest in snakes, and founder of the Long Beach Zoological Society. Wiley’s colorful history will be portrayed through the use of snakes embedded in the grass and extending onto the sidewalk area. The snakes will be composed of a colorful mosaic of handmade tile and natural stone be set in a foundation that will securely fix them into the landscape. Sizes of snakes will vary and will take into consideration location and expanse of the park. Their “escape” being a reference to the snakes that escaped while Wiley was director of the Brookfield Zoo, the incident that led to her move to California.
