“Seussentennial Fountain”
2004 • ceramic • 48” x 84”
The project was to create a fountain for the Quail Botanical Gardens entry in the San Diego County Fair. The theme for the fair was “Seussentennial” as a tribute to Dr. Seuss. My challenge in creating a sculptural work was to reference Dr. Seuss but not to create a literal translation of his work. Fountains are always popular with children so I created a seven-foot fountain with a gurgling spill of water that flows over the ball at the top and cascades down the ribbed sides into the basin. The colors were carefully chosen to represent only the hues of the flowers found in this garden area. An additional archway mimics the fountain in materials and color and is scaled for a child to walk under. The presentation was awarded the Grand Prize for Best Overall Landscape Exhibit and is now on permanent display in the children’s garden at Quail Botanical Gardens in Encinitas, California.
